I wanted to bring to life part of history that seems forgotten, especially among the younger generation of people in former Yugoslavia. – Jovana Mladenovic
“Monumental Fear” stems from an idea to explore and document the many WWII monuments spread across the former Yugoslavia, bringing together fashion, performance and photography. A member of Serbia’s National Ballet Company, Milena Ogrizovic, dances alongside the larger-than-life memorials clad in deep red billowing garments, making reference to the Communist Red Star. Her poses mimic and respond to these heroic concrete sculptures, at times playful, at times mournful.
Photographs were all shot on location at World War II monuments located in Serbia, former Yugoslavia, in the towns of Cacalica, Kosmaj, Pancevo, Jajnci, Sefkerin and Avala.
